Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital이화여자대학교 목동병원 has recently conducted its 53rd liver transplant surgery, the hospital said Monday.

Although the hospital started transplant operations relatively late, it had performed 53 liver transplants as of Aug. 31 -- 29 cases of deceased donor liver transplants and 24 cases of living donor liver transplants -- and five cases of liver transplants with unmatched blood groups.

For a successful liver transplant, patient management before transplantation is crucial. The team of Ewha Mokdong Hospital's organ transplant center has established the cooperation system between the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery so that patients with terminally ill dysfunction can maintain their lives until they are euthanized, the hospital said.

Doctors running Ewha Mokdong Hospital’s organ transplant center, including director, Jeong Gu-yong (fifth from right), celebrate their 50th liver transplant surgery in front of the center last Thursday.

The center controls preoperative and postoperative complications through the collaboration of related departments for accurate diagnosis and quick treatment.

For example, the organ transplantation center, which has integrated the organ transplant-related medical procedures with the kidney and liver center and the department of intensive care medicine, is improving the long-term success rate of transplantation through intensive care before and after transplantation and immunity control and nutrition management of patients.
