The Ewha Center for Vaccine Evaluation and Study will host the first Korea-China-Japan Joint Pneumococcal Symposium on Nov. 3, the Ehwa Womans University Medical Center이화의료원 said Tuesday.

The vaccine center has been presenting its research results annually for 12 years since its establishment and has shared the latest knowledge with various experts, it said. This year, the center invited experts on pneumococcal vaccines from Korea, China, and Japan to the international symposium.

The international symposium at Ewha Womans University LG Convention Hall will focus on research on vaccines, pandemic influenza, and pneumococcal vaccines in various fields, from primary research fields of pneumococci to the final stage of vaccine development, the hospital said.

The symposium will become a momentum to raise the status of Korea which is actively studying and developing existing vaccines, it added.

Professor Moon H. Nahm of Alabama State University, Birmingham, U.S., one of the world's leading experts on pneumococcal vaccines, will present on the theme of “Capsule Diversity: Endless Stories” to discuss pneumococcal capsules and their types, which is the most significant issue in pneumococcal disease and vaccine research.
