Samsung Medical Center and Intel Korea are teaming up to create artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical research infrastructure to develop a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis prediction model.

SMC President Kwon O-jung and Intel Korea President Kwon Myung-sook signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday at Samsung Medical Center.

Through the agreement, the two parties will work to secure an AI-based prediction model for a specific disease based on an optimized computing system for machine learning and deep learning.

Intel will provide a computing infrastructure designated for AI-based research loaded with the Xeon Scalable Processor, which SMC will use for AI research based on genetic and imaging data.

The two sides will jointly create a model for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis based on medical images, through developing an automatic tumor detection algorithm and a deep learning based image restoration and reconstruction algorithm.

At the same time, the firms will use multidimensional data on the genome, lifelog, and environmental variables to advance and improve the prediction algorithm of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

To accelerate AI-based research using the Intel architecture platform, the Korean offshoot of the U.S. company will provide technical support to optimize computing systems and share advanced technical knowledge for machine learning and deep learning research.

“We are confident that we will be able to build an outstanding win-win model by achieving substantial research results through the superior research activity of Samsung Medical Center’s medical professionals and Intel’s outstanding AI infrastructure,” SMC President Kwon said. “We expect the two companies will continue to cooperate in building an AI-based precision medical system.”

Intel Korea CEO Kwon Myung-sook also said, “Artificial intelligence will provide an important opportunity to lead change and innovation in the medical field. We expect to achieve innovative AI research results through cooperation with Samsung Medical Center, including for cancer treatment research and an advanced disease prediction model.”
