British American Tobacco (BAT) unveiled its plans to bring its upgraded flagship tobacco heating product, Glo Series 2, to Korean consumers, at a news conference Monday.
Korea is the first market in the world where the new product will go on sale
According to the company, Glo Series 2 applied luxurious design, while taking advantage of Glo's functional strengths released last August.
The device does not need a separate charger and users can use it up to 30 times continuously once they fully charge it. Also, the equipment uses BAT’s unique heating method, in which the device evenly heats the tobacco from inside to outside at a proper temperature.
BAT Korea also introduced Neo, a new cigarette stick that will replace the existing cigarette brand NeoStiks. The new line-up has six products -- Bright Tobacco, Fresh, Switch, Purple, Boost +, and Dark Tobacco +.
The company plans to produce the new cigarettes at its factory in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province.
“We are experiencing the most dynamic period of change our industry has ever encountered with technological advances allowing us to provide our consumers with a diverse portfolio of potentially reduced-risk products,” BAT Korea CEO Matthieu Juery said. “Because we are committed to driving the transformation of tobacco in Korea, the company is thrilled our Korean consumers are the first in the world to enjoy our enhanced Glo series 2 together with the new Neo sticks.”
By combining Glo’s unique surround heating technology and simplicity of use and its new range of Neo sticks, the company plans to provide more satisfying options to smokers in Korea who are looking for a potentially reduced-risk alternative to smoking, Juery added.

“Our latest short-term clinical study showed that when smokers switched completely from conventional cigarettes to Glo, their exposure to many harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke was significantly reduced,” Murphy said. “While we all agree that more long-term research is needed, our science, taken together with the recent Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s findings on Glo, has confirmed that Glo is a safer alternative to cigarettes.”
The company plans to sell Glo series 2 for 90,000 won ($80), with a discounted price of 60,000 won with a membership coupon voucher. Customers, who wish to purchase Glo series 2, can do so at Glo flagship stores, Glo e-commerce (www.discoverglo.co.kr device only), and convenience stores nationwide starting from July 30.
Glo is available to consumers in seven countries -- South Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Russia, Romania and Italy -- with plans for further market rollouts.
