Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) said Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Macrogen to conduct joint research on precise medicine.

Under the accord, the research division of SNUBH and Macrogen will cooperate in building a precise medical genome big data that can make the most of genomic, medicine, and medical information jointly.

Precision medicine refers to a personalized platform that provides optimal treatment for individual patients from diagnosis to treatment. In this process, it uses the proper dosage from the appropriate medication in consideration of different genetic, environmental, and biological characteristics of the patient.

Through this MOU, both institutions plan to use their accumulated precision medical genome big data as a core research resource for future patient-customized diagnosis and treatment research. SNUBH expects that the collaboration will improve the prediction accuracy of individual diseases and drug reactions, as well as contributing to research on drug repositioning.

Also, the two institutions plan to continue research exchanges even after the project by forming cohort for collaborative research, which can find out joint research projects in the field of precision medicine related to genome information.

“Precision medicine patient care is a global trend in medical care, and we are pleased to work with Macrogen, which has global capabilities in this regard,” said SNUBH Vice President Baek Rong-min. “Through this agreement, the hospital hopes that both organizations will lead the global healthcare fusion and hybrid research and set a stepping stone for the realization of precision medicine.”

Macrogen President Seo Jeong-sun also said, “SNUBH is the best medical institution in Korea, has rich clinical experience, and one of the best medical information infrastructures such as its full electronic medical record (EMR) system,”

He went on to say, “As the integration of medical and genomic information is essential for precision medicine, we expect that we will be able to contribute to an early realization of precise medicine if the two organizations maintain strong cooperation in the field of genome big data research.”
