Dong-A Pharmaceutical said Friday it has agreed to export Roman K, a birth control tablet, to Vietnam.

The company signed the export agreement with the General Office for Population and Family Planning (GOPFP) under the Vietnam Ministry of Health in August 2017. Under the accord, Dong-A Pharm plans to export $1 million worth of Roman K, also known as Melian in Korea, to GOPFP in the third quarter of this year after receiving related regulatory approval.

Dong-A Pharm submitted the sales approval application to the Vietnamese ministry in February 2018 and expects to receive final approval within this month.

Vietnam is trying to restrict population growth by providing birth control pills to women of childbearing age. According to the company, about 12 percent of Vietnamese women between the ages of 20 and 39, which is about 15.7 million, are taking oral birth control pills.

“In Vietnam, the market for health promotion products and generic drugs is steadily growing as the economy, and people's interest in health continues to grow,” a company official said. “We do our best to diversify export items and increase sales so that Vietnam will become our new growth engine.”
