Hanyang University Medical Center will enhance its specialty as a university general hospital and become a research-centered hospital.

Choi Ho-soon, new president of Hanyang University Medical Center (HUMC) and executive vice president for medical affairs at Hanyang University, emphasized this year marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of the medical school and the 47th anniversary of the hospital opening.

Choi Ho-soon, president of Hanyang University Medical Center and executive vice president for medical affairs at Hanyang University, holds a news conference at Hanyang University, Seoul, on Tuesday.

“Now is the time to prepare a centenary vision for our medical center, and becoming a research-centered hospital will be the starting point,” Choi said a news conference at Hanyang University on Tuesday. “We are doing our best to create an environment for revitalizing research by building units and human resources.”

Choi also said the hospital would apply state-of-the-art technologies such as ICT, Internet-of-Things, and artificial intelligence to meet the medical needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Choi set four primary goals for a centenary vision -- creating research synergy with integration, strengthening research capacity for future medicine, building smart medical infrastructure for patient care and medical research, and improving medical environment evaluation system to make the hospital safe and fair.

First of all, Choi is to establish a “biomedical fusion research center” to support various studies and encourage researchers to do business with them.

“I will help professors at Hanyang University Medical Center in Seoul and those at Guri Hospital jointly study with the engineering, natural science, and pharmacy departments,” he said.

Choi said he would ensure independent management of the Hanyang hospital in Seoul and that in Guri to enhance efficiency, and let each hospital outshine in their respective characteristics and capacities.

He also said he would accelerate digitizing medical information by introducing the next-generation electronic medical record (EMR) and create optimal healthcare information systems for a transition to a cloud and AI-based EMR.
