T&R Biofab said Wednesday that it has won a patent to manufacture artificial blood vessels using 3D bioprinting technology.

The patent is the technology to make an artificial blood vessel that can be transplanted into human bodies. It is a fusion of the polymer printing technology for external shape fixation and cell printing technology of microvascular tissue, which is a new 3D bioprinting technique that differs from previous methods, the company said.

Notably, the company's original technique prints the living cell with bio-ink to create a tubular-shaped artificial tissue similar to that of the actual one. Also, the printed product can perform human biological functions. The technique also can be applied to an artificial respiratory tract and throat, it said.

"The commercialization of our technology will attract great attention from both the domestic and global market, by providing innovative treatments for vascular diseases such as cardiac infarction and stroke," CEO Yoon Won-soo said.

The company plans to expedite research and development to advance the patent’s commercialization, he added.
